The Garden

The Garden a novel written by Matt slick is about Mark, an atheist who is grieving over the loss of his son whose death went unexplainable.

When his wife Kathy goes out of town to see her father, Mark is left home and is tempted by a demon to commit suicide but not knowing it was a demon. Mark is rescued by an angel, Sotare who comes in the form of a man. Together they talk of the nature of truth, life and most of all, Mark wants to know why his son was taken away by death at a young age. But while they talk in the Garden, in the trees are demons scheming to kill. And in the hospital demons want to kill John, Kathy's father.

It raises questions of how much the spiritual realm can touch the mortal realm. It raises awareness of the battle of demons and angels when people pray. I thought the Garden was thought provoking in that angels and demons fought when a smiple person prayed, I also liked the fact when they prayed, they prayed simple prayers and it actually worked.

Alas Babylon, written by Pat Frank, is an apocalyptic thriller that takes you away to a town in Florida in the 60's--an era when waxing floors and playing records were in vogue and the fear of nuclear war with the Soviet Union was part of being American. When a nuclear bomb takes out communication, transportation and power, survival mode begins. How will ordinary people respond? How would you?

Pat Frank uses his imagination to tell you what it would be like. Imagine hearing these words over your radio, spoken not by your President but by a woman who was formerly the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, until this day:

“ As chief executive of the United States and Commander of the Armed Forces, I hereby declare a state of unlimited national emergency until such time as new elections are held and congress reconvenes.”

The main character, Randy Bragg lives in Fort Repose, Florida. His sister-in-law and her two kids stay with him while his brother is working in top secret intelligence in a distant city. When food and medical supplies stop coming in things look bad. Things that didn't matter to them before matter now. Coffee is a rarity, liquor and candy too. Gas is nearly non existent making cars worthless.

This book makes you think of what you would do if a disaster hit. Would you bond together with your neighbors, putting your resources together or would you be greedy and fight for your life with no regard to others? It was masterfully written with believable characters, and realistic dialog and regional accents. The conclusion leaves you with hope which is the the icing on the cake.

I suggest readers 13 and up
